Combating Food Insecurity Together
In recognition of Sandra M. Edgerley's outstanding leadership as Chair of the Board of Directors for Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston from 2005 to 2010, and her dedicated service spanning over 14 years, we established the Edgerley Family Service Day. This initiative honors her significant contributions and continued commitment to our organization's mission and the youth we serve.
Join Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston for a community-wide day of service! We're bringing together our entire network of staff, board, friends council members, advisors, corporate sponsors, community partners, and their families - to make a tremendous impact in our Club communities. Thanks to our generous food partner, we aim to prepare over 3,000 food bags. These vital resources will be distributed across all 8 Clubs and YouthConnect, ensuring that our families have access to essential nutrition.
In Massachusetts, recent data shows that food insecurity rates are approaching the peak levels seen at the onset of the pandemic:
• Approximately 17.9% of all households in MA reported food insecurity in February 2024.
• As of February 2024, an estimated 22.9% of households with children are facing food insecurity.
BIPOC households are recovering from the pandemic significantly slower than white households. From August 2023 to January 2024:
• 1 in 5 (19.3%) white households with children were food insecure
• More than 1 in 3 (29.5%) Black households with children were food insecure
• Approximately 1 in 3 (34.5%) Latino/a households with children were food insecure
